CONTEMPORARY ASSAULT RIFLES

Assault rifles appeared during World War II. The concept was to give the ground soldier a weapon which could fire rapidly while in close combat, and have good precision for long range firing. Heavy rifles, like the first Kalashnikov rifles, or weapons like the G-3, have been progressively replaced by light caliber assault rifles, like the M-16, which are more accurate and less lethal : an incapacitated soldier causes more trouble to an army than a dead one.
"Bullpup" configuration, with the magazine behind the grip like the Enfield IW rifle or the FAMAS, has been preferred since the seventies for weapons that have needed to be compact, for use by parachutists or for urban and jungle combat.

The AN is more accurate than earlier russian designs, using the smaller cartridge and a system called "blowback shifted pulse", where the bolt and receiver reciprocate independantly during firing. This permits extremely fast 2 round bursts to be fired.
